After spending hours sending your résumé, submitting applications, and nailing a few interviews, you finally got the job. Congrats! You probably already have your outfit for the first day of work laid out, but after that, you’re going to have to keep the professional look up. How to look profesional and what is an office dress code?

The clothes you wear to work are a way to convey your professionalism and show that you belong in your work environment. An office dress code describes the level of formality of the clothes you can wear to work. Most organisations do not keep a written code of exactly what kind of clothes employees should wear; rather they use broad terms like “business professional,” “business formal,” “business casual,” or “casual.”

Business professional– How to dress?

It is the most traditional and conservative office dress code. This kind of business uniform is the everyday officewear in industries like finance, banking, government, and law. A suit or pantsuit and button-down shirt (often with a tie) or knee-length pencil skirt and blazer and are the requirements for business professional dress. Heels, only something closed-toe and three inches or shorter. You can wear elegant flats, loafers, and oxfords.

Business Formal– How to dress?

Business formal is a dressed-up version of business professional, a dress code mostly reserved for events such as galas and benefit dinners. For this one you should wear a dark-colored , elegant suit or skirt suit, a dress shirt, and dress shoes. Ties and pocket squares should be silk and jewelry and cufflinks simple and minimalistic.

Business Casual– How to dress?

Business casual doesn’t mean casual. Business casual actually means that you don’t have to wear a suit and tie. Business casual clothes usually includes a collared shirt (button-up or polo shirt) and blazer on top, with slacks, chinos, or a skirt on the bottom. You may also wish to add a cardigan or sport coat, but you don’t necessarily wear a custom-tailored suit jacket. Shoes should be closed-toe and professional, for example boots, heels, flats, loafers or oxfords. Business casual is an accurate way to dress if you aren’t sure of what kind of environment you’re walking into since it might be somewhere between business professional and casual.

Casual & Smart-Casual– How to dress?

A casual office dress code is more relaxed compering to business casual, but it doesn’t mean you should dress as casually as you would outside of work. This type of work outfit is common in creative industries and on casual Fridays at more formal workplaces. To maintain a professional look while wearing casual clothing, you should wear button-downs, blouses, and T-shirts in solid colors and classic, dark-wash or black denim without rips and holes. Simple, elegant sneakers may be okay, stick to closed-toe shoes, and never wear flip-flops!

Smart-casual clothing is an upgraded version of casual, rather suited to job interviews, client meetings, and events at casual workplaces. For a smart-casual outfits, break out trendier pieces, like a work-appropriate pants, a coat or jacket, and higher-end shoes.
